Oh, How the Swedes Loathe Us

I almost laughed my head off earlier today when I read Johanne Hildebrandt's column in the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. (If you know Swedish, read the whole article here.) She wrote about how snotty we as Norwegians were, and how we consider ourselves to be superior to everyone else in the Nordic region. I reckon this is very funny indeed, as she has achieved just the opposite of what she (probably) intended to. You see, we've always considered ourselves to be inferior to the rest of the region (well, perhaps not of the Icelanders), but what she has said means they must be very jealous of us and consider us to actually be superior to them. Brilliant! We can stop this inferiority complex nonsense and get on with our lives!

I’m delighted to report that

The EU-commission places Sweden at the bottom of a ranking list concerning efficiency.

American productivity is normalized to 100 points, the EU averages at 78, and Sweden obtains a mere 69.

Moreover, the Swedish productivity has been steadily decreasing over the last few years.

Despite the fact that the Swedish state spends more money on its inhabitants than any other state, the inhabitants gets less real value for their tax money than anywhere else.

Isn’t this great news?

Is my dictionary in the wrong? When looking up ’swede’ it asserts that

swede = brassica napus rapifera, aka TURNIP

You and the Swedes sound just as peculiarly screwed up as the English, Welsh, Scots and Irish. Why do screwed up nations always sound just like screwed up people?

I got distracted by your picture of George W Bush. I just heard some comic doing him on the radio this morning, and I can't get the line out of my head. Or quite remember it clearly. Something like: 'Welcome, fellow umbrella-stands!'

There are some brilliant Geo W mimics around.And we have just seen Fahrenheit 9-11 on TV. My boys watched a lot of it (they lost it around the war stories) and thought it was wonderful. Which is somehow comforting.
