Christmas Tree - Trafalgar Square

I had a day off today after working 15 days in a row, which was very nice. I decided I'd just relax and ended up (after having done the washing-up) watching programmes I have taped during the past month or so. A couple of episodes of the brilliant The Street (particularly looking forward to next week's episode) as well as The Secret Millionaire and Friends and Crocodiles, which was nothing like what I had pictured. By the way, I thought Jodhi May should have been top of the bill on that one, but perhaps I am biased.

Then I went downtown to witness the lighting of the Christmas tree at Trafalgar Square. It rained, which meant a lot of people with brollies, which again meant a lousy view. We also had to endure the embarrassing Norwegian accent of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. All in all a disappointing event which really wasn't worth the trip...well, apart from yours truly's annual testing of the old singing voice, as they played the Norwegian national anthem. Quite ruined by the annoying students in front of me (three Norwegians, one Brit) who just couldn't shut the fuck up. Total lack of respect, I think.

On a sidenote I am having mixed feelings about my blog quickly popping up when googling for most combinations containing the term "Philip Quast". Surely there are more informed and less biased sites out there?

And while I remember; The Stage ran a short review of this year's Royal Variety Performance today and it looks to be a good one. It's on next week, I think, and a would recommend it to my friends abroad as well. There's a number or two from Hairspray in there, among other things.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon...Only I'm at Work

Hi, it's me. Bet you missed me.

Evita has ended. I went to the last performance and it was all very tearful and sad and happy at the same time, because the very long curtain call and standing ovation seemed to be slightly more than most of the cast had anticipated. We finally managed to lure them back onto stage, ruining their whole "one curtain call only" rule, although it did take us a few minutes. And when they went back off the stage, they sauntered out, taking in the sight of a packed Adelphi giving them a well-deserved standing ovation.

So now that that adventure has ended, I am officially taking a break from spending all my time and money on theatre. I have been very good and not fallen into the Sweeney Todd trap. Too expensive for my budget.

Besides, I have spent my money on upgrading my home entertainment options. A new 32" LCD/TV, a Playstation 3 and a new mp3/video player for those long trips to and fro work. No, I did not win the lottery, only shuffled a few things around on my budget...and obtained a loan. Oops.

Let me just say...Playstation 3 on a normal CRT screen and a LCD/TV via the HDMI cable...two completely different versions of the same console. Wow.

Also, something very strange happened the other day (apart from the fact that they finally kicked Ben off of Any Dream Will Do?)--I've had this silly teenage crush on a particular actor for about a month now, one of those that'll probably go away after a while, but I have been very obsessed for a while. Last week I was going to town but had forgotten my Oyster card and had to go back home to get it. Back on the tube luck would have it that this certain actor was sitting opposite me for about 15 minutes. It's a small world.

Off to buy burgers. There's a programme about Sami people later on, followed by a documentary about the Shetland Islands. And thanks for bringing back The Friday Night Project.

Cleaning and Theatre

On my first day off (Friday) we tidied and cleaned the flat because our letting agency were coming for a visit. Checking up on us to see if we were still to be trusted.

Apparently, we were, and it took them two minutes to figure this out. All the hours of hard work paid off. Well, hopefully. Celebrated by playing Shadow Hearts: Covenant, which I had been looking forward to all week.

Saturday started with watching Schindler's List--not a good choice if you want to leave the house afterwards--and followed by The Lake House. Or possibly the other way around, I forget.

We then went down to the Apollo Theatre in order to see The Glass Menagerie starring Jessica Lange, Ed Stoppard, Mark Umbers and a delightful Amanda Hale. We had cheap seats, which we swapped with a couple for slightly better seats, but still we were too far away from the stage for me to see adequately. Wearing glasses, I had to squint a lot in order to see anything. I almost fell asleep a lot during the first act because of this. I bought a packet of Polo during the interval, though, and since the couple in front of us had given up and left, there was suddenly no need to squint as much and with the constant supply of Polo and an enjoyable second act I eventually left the theatre elated.

The rest of the evening was left to telly. I am not going to comment the Josephs this week.

Sunday was spent playing Shadow Hearts: Covenant until I reached a stage where I actually died for the first time in 14 hours, and I was in such shock I had to turn it off. Felt a bit peckish and thought I should probably watch something while having my late lunch, so naturally I popped a whole mini-series into the DVD player. Couldn't turn it off. Tipping the Velvet - absolutely LOVE that story. Had totally forgotten that Hugh Bonneville was in it, so that was an added bonus. And then I had to borrow Daniel Deronda from my flatmate (yes, there are in fact three links between the two series), which I started watching late last night. I had completely forgotten David Bamber was in that one. I seriously need to check my memory.
