Rights for Sex Offenders

That is not a statement, just a headline. My personal view on sex offenders is rather radical in that they should be snip-snipped the moment their first (and hopefully only) sentence.

However, that is not what I wanted to mention (even though I like expressing my views, of course, to my flatmate's great dismay when we're watching something that really provokes me...I usually come up with a more moderate approach the next day). Apparently, there is a new Dutch political party being founded these days, and they are looking to lower the age of consent to 12 and legalise child pornography. One reader of the paper Algemeen Dagblad said that they should be allowed to voice their opinions, but fortunately their opinions will not achieve anything due to intelligent people staying away from the party.

Let's hope they're right. Liberalism is supposed to liberate people, not punish them, and in this case it is quite clear that the victims are the children, not the perverted paedophiles who cannot fight their urges. Get a life.

Late Night Parlour Games...sort of

Last night I played poker, which was nice. I came fourth out of eleven. Not bad for someone who's never played poker 'live' before. Then again, I only won one hand and basically sat out most of the rest. :-)

I have started working real shifts, which is also nice, because it means I've become more of a 'real' employee. Unfortunately it means I will have to work six days in a row. Actually, I don't really mind. Working Sundays, however, is a bit strange because the tube isn't as active and it sort of feels like you pop by work on your day off. Which makes the day fly by, of course.

I am thinking of getting a satellite dish. When I have the money. Far off into the distant future, in other words. I would like to be able to watch Norwegian telly here. There are a few things I miss about that, you see. But it'll cost me, so it's definitely a project for the future.

Considering going to see MI:III tomorrow and possibly X3 during the weekend, although I have a feeling I will wait until after the Bank Holiday. I am really looking forward to the latter and since I heard from a very reliable source (hi, Cato!) that the former is a must-see, I really have no choice. Darn. *winks*

Terry Wogan...

...claims he's not drunk, but he must be by now! Certainly sounds like it.

And I think we may say congrats to Finland - about time!!!

Midway through the Eurosong

Right. OK. So, first of all: To those of you who are doing the sing-along thing at the Beeb: The lyrics aren't necessarily directly translated. I know this for a fact, as the Norwegian lyrics are not too similar too the English translation. And then, a little tip for our dearly beloved Terry Wogan: The Norwegian song? It does not sound Irish. It's pure Norwegian folk. You should know this, Terry, that our two histories are sort of woven together, down to the music. What sounds Irish to you, is very, very Norwegian to us.

So, midway through the Eurovision Song Contest, I'm afraid I have a few favourites. I will be voting for the Norwegian one, because...I can. Haha! And I quite like it. I will also be voting for the Finnish one, since it's alternative enough for me to be a breath of fresh air. The German one was kind of nice, as was the Danish entry. I like the British one, but since I can't vote for that one, I will pick a couple of others.

One Day till Eurosong

Two days ago we celebrated Norway's constitutional day at the Norwegian church and seamen's mission in Rotherhithe, southeast London. It was quite nice, lots of people (I think the place was full, since some had to sit on the benches by the wall) and nice coffee, cakes, waffles (the edible sort) and last, but certainly not least, we visited their kiosk where we bought Norwegian sweets and fizzy drinks (there is nothing quite like Solo). Heaven! Unfortunately the entertainment was a bit on the cheesy side (not the edible sort), but we managed to disregard that because of the celebration. We then went back home, stopped by the pub for a couple of hours and talked loudly about sex.

Tomorrow sees one of the main events of the year happening in Greece, namely the Eurovision Song Contest. This year I am going all sophisticated and will make a real Excel spreadsheet for all the votes. I usually do this on a piece of paper and never look at it again. This way I can gather all the information I need for the looming verbal assault on Sweden ('you did not give us one single vote again, you bastards, even though we gave you 12 points'). Denmark, however, will of course give us their 12 points.

And when I say 'us', I mean Norway. The British entry is interesting and definitely an outsider, but may very well be cheesy enough for the Germans to give it their 12 points. France will vote for Turkey and Bosnia and Russia and all of those as per usual, Cyprus will not dare giving their maximum points to anyone but Greece, and Portugal the same when it comes to Spain. You can really find the European countries with the inferiority complex around this time of year.

Sunday Afternoon

Have a look at this article in the Sunday Times about the upcoming Evita musical.

I watched the whole FA Cup final yesterday. Not quite sure how that came about, but apparently it was the best FA Cup final in fifty years, according to the very excited BBC commentators, and I was trying to leap into the telly a few times myself (rooting for West Ham, of course, one does take proud in one's neighbourhood after all), so I'm pretty glad I did see it.

By the way, don't go shopping on a Sunday. Too crowded.

Growing Old and White

Slightly different moods when we both discovered we had a few white strands of hair each today; while my flatmate went straight into denial, I was exhilarated and did not want them removed. My job obviously makes me grow old. Bear in mind that I discovered my first strand of white hair last summer, though. I should look distinguished by now.

Oops!

I bought another ticket for Evita. It'd better be worth it!

I have completely forgotten to congratulate West Ham for getting to the FA Cup final and especially The O's for making the cut and being promoted to League One next year! Brilliant!

Annoyed on the Tube

I know there are so many other things going on in this world that it's very silly being annoyed at little things, but I have a sore throat and will have one for two more days and then it'll turn into a full-blown cold and I'm not looking forward to that.

As I was walking to the tube after work today, I very quickly realised I was walking behind one very sweaty man indeed. I walked briskly past him and aimed for the front carriage as I was pretty sure I would get rid of him that way.

Well, guess what. Of all the seats on all of the six or seven carriages, he sat down right next to me. Luckily he got off at the next station. Unfortunately he was replaced by a man with very bad breath.

I think people who have bad breath should be banned from public places if they can't learn to keep their mouths shut. I mean, seriously, smelling something very much like dog shit coming out of someone's mouth is really disgusting. I dread having bad breath myself and would rather cover my mouth or turn my head when laughing or talking to people, and I truly hope that if it turns out my breath is horrible, someone would tell me.

And I just had a long chat on the phone with a friend whom I haven't seen for a couple of years, so all is well. Feels good!

Another thing which feels good, is the prickly feeling of glee when I see the posters for the new X-Men film popping up on my way to work. And someone said something about the first Evita posters being put up these days! Eeeeek! How will I survive the show itself? I will probably have a seizure and be carried out of there within the first three minutes.

It's That Magical Date Again!

The 5th of May always has a very special ring to me.

Happy Birthday to Michael Palin, the ultimate reason for why I live in London, who is 63 today! Yay! Other things have happened in the interim and Mr. Palin is no longer the only reason for my moving here, but he will still be The One That Sparked the Interest. Of course, driving past the BBC Television Centre every day truly re-sparks the interest. Sigh.

Work is going well, I'm not a complete failure and hopefully I will stay here for a long while longer. I'm actually looking forward to going to work. I haven't felt like that since...ever, I think. Of course, it could have something to do with my co-workers. It could definitely have something to do with my previous co-workers.

Yesterday saw the True Start of Summer, as we had what the Evening Standard called 'a heatwave'. It was 28 degrees outside and I noticed that my pace was not as quick as usual. The tube was not exactly a joyful place to stand, dressed for early spring and with a non-existing personal space for 45 minutes. Still, I did survive and treated myself with some 'Chunky Monkey' when I got home. And no, that's not a sexual innuendo.

It's an ice cream.

Stop sniggering.

Deep breath.

And we're back.

So the weekend will land in a few hours and I'm already looking forward to going back to work. How sad is that. I mean, it would have been fine if it were The Job, you know, the dream job I've always wanted, but it's not even anywhere near it! I must be in love or something. Or just very, very happy there are money coming into my account at last.

And they're showing repeats of Waking the Dead, why wouldn't I be happy?

Current track: Nada.

2008

We all know how extremely little advanced the Chinese are when it comes to rights of all sorts, but if it's true that they're bashing stray dogs to death in order to clean up before the 2008 Olympics, I will personally not only boycott the Olympics itself, but also the contestants that go there.

Current track: Nothing, I'm at work.
